I’m Alexis James, a licensed mental health counselor with over a decade of experience. I’m licensed in New York, Florida, and Virginia, and registered for telehealth in South Carolina. I specialize in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and bring deep commitment and expertise to helping clients improve their mental well‑being.

I’m especially passionate about working with individuals from marginalized communities, and I center culturally responsive care for Black women and other underserved populations. I create a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and emotions, empowering you to overcome challenges and build a more fulfilling life.

I focus on truly understanding and caring for each client as they face their unique challenges. To get started with with Alexis James Virtual Counseling, follow these steps:

  2. If you are new to my practice, complete a new client interest form, or email directly at alexis@ajvirtualcounseling.com. You will receive detailed instructions about next steps including, scheduling options and how to create a  client portal account. If you are a previous/returning client, click here.

  3. Fill out the intake forms with your personal information (this is provided all within your confidential client portal account).

  4. Choose a convenient date and time for your virtual session.

  5. Log in to the virtual session at the scheduled time using the link provided in your client portal and Meet your counselor and begin your virtual counseling session.

  • Yes! I work with many clients who choose to pay for their care out of pocket. .

    My self pay rate is $150 for the intake (first appointment) and $120 for follow up visits.

  • Yes! I work with clients who have Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, Oscar Health, Oxford, Optum and some United Health Care plans in New York, Virginia, and Florida.

    In Virginia, I am also contracted with Carelon Behavioral Health and Kaiser Permanente of the Mid Atlantic in Virginia.

  • This is based on many factors. Generally, I meet with most clients on weekly or biweekly basis.

  • Once you've completed your new client form, you will be sent (via email) instructions for creating a client portal account. In this account, you will be able to complete intake forms, store a form of payment, message your provider securely, and schedule appointments. Additionally, the client portal allows us to meet virtually using secure video conferencing software.

  • You can cancel or reschedule your appointment easily. You can cancel and/or reschedule in your client portal account.

    Keep in mind, we ask that you provide at least 24 hours notice. Appointments cancelled or not attended (no show) are subject to a $95 no show fee.

    Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy that can be useful for people who experience emotions intensely. It's based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and can help people: Understand and accept difficult feelings, Learn skills to manage emotions, and Make positive changes in their lives. 

    DBT techniques can help people develop skills like:
